MARRIAGE Muhurata

Närada Puräëa
2nd Pada Chapter 56.415-523

415.                        It is desirable to conduct the marriage of girls in the even years of their birth, and that of boys in the odd years of their birth. Otherwise, it would be destructive of both.

416.                        The months of Mägha, Phälguna, Vaiçäkha and Jyeñöha are auspicious;  Kåttika and Mågaçérña are middling; the rest are censurable.

417.                        Never should marriage, installation of deities and upanayana be performed in ten asterisms from the time that the Sun enters the nakshatra Ärdrä.

418.                        Marriage should not be performed when Jupiter or Venus have set or when they are in the stages of childhood and old age (that is, just after they have risen or when they are about to set.). Neither when Jupiter is in the sign Leo or in a Leo-part (in any other sign).

419.                        For thirteen days after its rise in the West or in the East Venus would be in the ‘child’s stage’ and for five days before setting, the stage of ‘old age’. In the case of Jupiter, both stages would be 15 days duration.

420.                        So long as Lord Viñëu (Håñékeça) is asleep, it is not auspicious. There is nothing more auspicious than the festival day of Viñëu (Väsudeva).

421.                        The marriage of the first born, whether boy or girl, should not be conducted in the month of their birth, nor in the nakshatra of their birth, nor in the week-day of their birth.

422.                        In the month of Jyeñöha, the marriage of both the Jyeñöhaputré and Jyeñöhaputra (eldest daughter and the eldest son) should not be performed. It is best to have one ‘Jyeñöha’ at a time, not otherwise.

423.        A marriage should not be performed for a week after a natural visitation (utpäta), like the appearance of a comet, earthquake etc., nor a complete eclipse. If the eclipse is partial (the prohibition) is for   three days. Similarly, prohibited are the intercalary3 lunar day which touches three civil days touches three civil days (tridyuspåk) and expunged lunar day.

424                         In the case of planetary obscuration, three days after their setting and three days before their rise should be eschewed.

425                         Five days towards the close of the lunar month should be eschewed. So also the 8th and the riktä days viz. 4th, 9th and 14th. The yogas Vyatépäta and Vaidhåti, in their entirety, and half of Parigha are also to be eschewed.

426.        Marriage is recommended in the following nakshatras: Revati (Pausa), Uttaraphalguni, Uttaräñaòha and Uttarbhädrapada (tryuttara), Anurädhä (Maitra), Svä (Marut). Mågaçérña (Candra), Hasta (Arka), Maghä (Pitrya) and Müla, when these are not in vedha4 i.e., when they are not mutually afflicted.

427                If, in a marriage, the potencies of Jupiter and the Sun are required for the couple, effort should be made to worship those two weak planets.5

428                 The strengths of the gocara, vedha and añöavarga reckoned in rüpa are higher in the ascending order. The strength gocaras is of a general nature compared to the others.

429-430a.     The potencies of the Moon and the nakshatras should be considered and then the strength of the five constituents of the païcäìga. Of the latter, if the strength of the tithi is one, that of the week day is two- fold, that of the nakshatra is three-fold, that of yoga is four-fold and that of karaëa (tithiyardha) is five-fold.

430b-431.    The prognostication as reckoned in the muhurata is much stronger than the previous. The combined strength of the above has to be duly considered. All the signs which are beneficently aspected are commended in fixing a marriage.

433-343a.     The signs occupied by the five planets, Moon, Sun, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus are acceptable. That is an auspicious lagna where all four, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are in strength and which is devoid of the blemish of Jämitra6 or the twenty-one great faults mentioned below.

434b-435a.  Twenty One Major Blemishes (Ekaviàçatimahädoña):  O Narada! Listen now, to the names and effects of the twenty-one ‘Major Blemishes’ being set out below:

435b-436.    (i) Païcäìgaçuddhi-rähitya is declared as the first blemish. (ii) The second is Udayästaçuddhi-héna-Süryasaì-krama (iii) The third is Päpañaòvarga, then follows (iv) Bhågu-ñañöha and  (v) Kujãñöama;

437-439a.     (vi) Gaëòänta (vii) Kartari (viii-ix) Rippha-ñaòañöendu (x) Sagraha (xi-xii) Añöama-lagna and Añöamaräçi of the couple. (xiii) Viñaghaöé (xiv) Muhürtadoña (Durmuhürta), (xv) Väradoña (xvi) Ekärgala (Kharjürikä-samäìghribha), (xix) Krürasaàyutarkña (xx) Kuëaväàça and (xxi) Mahäpäta-Vaidhåti.

439b-440.    (i) Non purity of Païcäìga: Païcäìga is constituted by Tithi, Vära, Nakñatra, Yoga and Karaëa. The purity of the five items constitutes the purity of the Païcäìga. When there is a blemish in the Païcäìga, mere merit in lagna would not bring the desired results.

441a.      Discard Païceñika (‘Five arrows’; éñikä-bäëa): as if it is milk mixed with poison.7

441b-442.    If at the selected muhürta, the lagna and lagnäàçaka are not aspected or are together with their respective lords or by their mutual lords or auspicious friends, such a muhürta should be rejected. If the lagna be the 7th or the 7th section, the bridegroom will meet with death.

443a.      If the lagna and the lagnäàçaka are not aspected or are together as indicated above, the death of the bride will result at the time of the marriage.

443b-444a.  (ii) Saìkrama: In marriage, each sixteen näòikäs have to be eschewed before and after the transit of the Sun into a sign.

444b.      (iii) Päpa-Ñaòvarga8 : In fixing a marriage etc., the auspicious findings is read off from Ñaòvarga are greatly commended and so the inauspicious times reckoned by the  Ñaòvarga reckonings should be avoided.

445.                        Venus in the 6th House: The blemish of Bhågu-ñañöha occurs when Venus occupies the 6th House. Even if   Venus is in exaltation and occupies the Lagna with an auspicious planet, such a lagna should always be rejected.

446.                        (v) Mars in the 8th House: The great blemish Kujãñöama will occur when Mars occupies the 8th House from the lagna. Reject the lagna even if it is occupied by three benefic planets if there is alongside Mars in exaltation.

447.                        (vi) Gaëòänta: Gaëòänta relating to tithi or lunar days occur for two näòikäs each at the junctures of the three Pürëä tithis with the three Nandä thithis (i.e., between the 5th and the 6th; the 10th and 11th and 15th and 1st)9. This time is deadly in the matter of birth, travel, marriage etc.,

448.                        Gaëòänta relating to Lagna occurs for half a näòikäs each at the junctures of Cancer and Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius and Pisces and Aries; these times are deadly.

449.                        Gaëòänta relating to Nakñatra occurs at the junctures of the ending sixteen näòikäs of the three nakñatra Äçleñä (Sarpa), Jyeñöha (Indra) and Revaté (Pauñëa) with the first three quarters of the respective succeeding nakñatras viz. Maghä, Müla and Açviné.

450a.      The said three types of junctures form three different Gaëòäntas, which are all highly harmful.

450b-451a.  (vii) Kartari: The crossing (in their motion) of two evil planets, one in regular motion and the other in retrograde motion, while facing the lagna is known as Kartari; it will cut the throats of the couple like a pair of scissors.

452b.      Ripphañaòañöendu: When Moon occupies the 6th, 8th and 12th (Rippha) houses, the blemish of that name is caused.

453-454a.     Discard even with effort, the above said lagna, even if it be occupied by Jupiter and Venus. For a lagna within an enemy house (Moon is in marana sthana in the 8th) even if occupied by friendly planets, either in exaltation or debilitation and even if invested with all qualities, is deadly to couples.

454b-455a.  (x) Sagraha: When the moon is in conjunction with some other planet, the ‘blemish’ by name Sagraha occurs. Do nor perform marriages at a muhürta when the said blemish prevails.

455b-457     When the Sun is in conjunction with the Moon, to be sure, poverty will result; with Mars, disease; with Venus, one will have a co-wife; with Saturn, will turn into a recluse; with Rähu, destruction of family base. If the Moon is in conjunction with Ketu, continued suffering and poverty will result.

458-459a.     If the Moon is in conjunction with evil planets, the death of the couple will result. However, if the Moon in exaltation is in conjunction with beneficent planets in friendly signs, the lagna does not turn evil but always tends to their welfare.

459b-460a.  On the other hand, Moon in exaltation or in the nakñatra or in a friendly house, if it is in conjunction with an evil planet, will cause their death.

460b-461a.  (xi-xii) Añtama-Lagna and Añtama-Rasi: The eight lagna or the eighth sign of birth of the couple, if it occupies the lagna at the time of the marriage that too, would cause the death of the couple.

462b-463a.  The twelfth lagna or sign of birth of the couple, occupying the lagna of the marriage will result in their loss of wealth. Hence discard the lord of that division of the lagna.

463b-464a.  The rise of the birth sign and the rise of the birth lagna are auspicious. If the lagna of the muhürta is in their upacayas10 of the above two, it is extremely auspicious.

464b-468.    (xiii) Viñaghaöi: Four ghaöikäs each in continuation of the under-mentioned ghaöikäs respectively in the twenty-seven nakñatras are called Viñaghaöikäs. They should be eschewed in fixing times of marriages etc., even if endowed with other qualities. They are in order from the Açviné nakñatra:

               (1)Açviné: 50 (2) Bharaëé: 24  (3) Kåttikä :30 (4) Rohiëé:40 (5) Mågaçira: 13

               (6) Ärdrä: 21 (7) Punarvasu: 30 (8) Puñya : 20 (9) Äçleñä :32 (10) Maghä: 30

               (11) Purvaphalguné: 20 (12) Uttaraphälguné: 18 (13) Hasta : 20 (14) Citrä: 20

               (21) Uttaräñäòha : 20 (22) Çravaëa : 10 (23) Çraviñöhä :10 (24) Çatabhiñak : 18

               (25) Pürvabhädrapadä : 16 (26) Uttarabhädrapadä : 24 (27) Revaté : 30.

469.        (xiv) Muhürtadoña: Such muhürtas in the week-day from Sunday are censured for other auspicious rites are to be censured also for marriages etc., even if invested with good qualities.11

470.        (xv) Väradosa: Such days of the week fro which blemishes have been indicated are in the following order beginning with Sunday, are to be eschewed also for marriage which is the most auspicious rite, even if the days are endowed with all qualifications.12

471.           (xvi) Ekägala: Discard a Lagna which encompasses even a fourth part of a nakñatra having the blemish of Ekägala13, as it is milk mixed with poison even if the lagna is occupied by Venus and Båhaspati.

472.                        (xvii) Grahaëotpätabha: In an auspicious rite like marriage, the nakñatra in which an eclipse or an Utpäta occurs (fall of a meteor, earthquake etc.,) should be discarded for three succeeding seasons (i.e., six months). Thereafter as charred firewood, except when they are occupied by the Moon. (bhuktvä muktam bham).

473.                        (xviii-xix) Krüraviddharkña and Krüsaàyuta: In auspicious rites like marriages, discard all nakñatras which are afflicted by viddha14 or in conjunction with violent planets, as païcagavya15 to which a drop of wine has been added.

474.                        If the nakñatra in question is afflicted only by its fourth part, that too, by benefic planets, the whole nakñatra is rendered inauspicious. However, if the affliction or being in conjunction is by cruel planets, the whole nakñatra has to be discarded.

475-477a.   (xx) Kunaväàçaka: The naväàças, Libra, Gemini, Virgo and the second half of Sagittarius are auspicious except the ending in each. The ending will also be auspicious only if they are in vargottama16 category. The other naväàçakas are not to be selected since they are Kunaväàçaka (i.e., ‘Evil naväàçakas’). A lagna in which there is Kunaväàçaka is to be rejected even if endowed with all other qualifications.

477b-478a.  (xxi) Mahäpäta Vaidhåti: The day on which the Mahäpäta vaidhåti occurs, should be eschewed in auspicious rites like marriage, even if endowed with all qualities, for it will cause death of the couple.

478B-479a.  Minor Blemishes (Svalpadosa): Svalpadosa not mentioned above also exist, like for instance, lightning and hailstorm; mock-Sun, a Halo round the Sun and the Moon, rainbow and thunderclouds: Lattä- minor tremors etc., Lunar days called ‘burnt month’- dagdhamäsa.

479b.      Dagdha-Lagna (Burnt Lagna) and the Lagnas with the appellation ‘blind’, ‘deaf’ and ‘lame’, the explanation of these are given below.

480.        Lightning and Hailstorm which occur at unexpected times will indeed be injurious to auspicious rites, though in the course of  time, they do become non-injurious.

481.        There is, however, no doubt that anyone of the planets, Jupiter, Venus or Mercury will obviate the effects of these groups of blemishes if it is in a kendra.17

482-484a.     Vedha (Piercing Affliction): Draw a Diagram18 with five vertical and five horizontally across. Mark the nakñatra Kåittika (Agnidhiñnya) at the end of the second diagonal in the North East and the other nakñatras including Abhijit in order in a clockwise direction. The mutually ‘pierced’ nakñatras are those at the ends of the lines.

484b-485a.  Lattā: The Sun and other planets affect for a day, a nakñatra ahead or behind it (alternately). Thus the Sun affects the 12th nakñatra ahead of it; the Moon affects the 22nd nakñatra behind it; Mars affects the 3rd ahead of it; Mercury affects the 7th behind it; Jupiter affects the 6th ahead of it; Venus affects the 5th behind it; Saturn affects the 8th ahead of it and Rahu affects the 9th behind it. These are to be scrupulously avoided in fixing muhürtas.

485b-486a.  Pätabha (Malignant Nakñatra): Count from the 13th nakñatra, Hasta (Süryabha), the 9th nakñatra Äçreñä (Sarpa), 10th nakñatra Maghä (Pitrya), 27th nakñatra Revaté (Antyä), 14th nakñatra Citra (Tväñöra), 17th nakñatra Anurädhä (Mitra) and 22nd nakñatra Çravaëa (Viñëubha) and count off those numbers from 1st nakñatra Açviné. The nakñatras got would be malignant nakñatras (pätabhas).

486b.      In Sauräñöra and the Sälva country the blemish of Lattä is not taken note of.

487.                        Pätita (Minor Tremor) is not considered auspicious in Kaliìga (Orissa) and Vaìga (Bengal) countries. In Bälhéka Kuru country and certain other regions however, it is not a blemish at all.

488.                        Dagdha-tithi and Dagdha-Lagna: The ‘burnt’ lunar days and the ‘burnt’ lagnas are eschewed in Madhyadeça (Madhya Pradesh) but not considered inauspicious in other areas.

489.                        The ‘lame’, the ‘blind’ and the ‘deaf’ lagnas19 and the signs which do not contain the ending of a lunar month are rejected in the Gauòa and Mälava regions, but not censured in other areas.

490.                        Every moment is infested with some blemish or other, and it would be impossible even for the creator to wipe off the blemishes completely. Hence one should opt for the maximum of auspiciousness and the minimum of blemishes.

491a.      Marriage Altar: In an auspicious lagna decided upon in consideration of the above, should arrange mutual viewing of one another by the couple.

491b-495.    The couple should then be made to ascend an auspicious altar where the fire is kept- an altar which is one cubit high, a square of four cubits on all sides supported by four polished pillars, slightly slanting to the left with a pavilion around, beautified by steps on the four sides; elongated on the East and the North; beautified by the planting of plantain trunks; ornamented with replicas of swans and parrots, painted pots and shoots placed on the arches; decked with heaps of love-inciting flowers and colours; sanctified by the benedictions of brāhmaëas and pleasing with auspicious and divinely beautiful ladies; and making the heart merry with musical instruments, dance and songs.

496                  Mutual horoscopic agreement of the couple (Küöas): There are eight mutual
compatibilities which conduce sons and grandsons:

               (i) Räçi (ii) Stridüra (iii) Gaëa (iv) Räçéça (v) Yoni (vi) Varëa (vii) Rajju and
               (viii) Vaçya.

497-498a.     Agreement of Raçi: Different nakñatra for the couple in the same Raçi is excellent. Middling is to have different räçis, but the same nakñatra. The marriage of a couple born in the same nakñatra in the same räçi results in death.

498b-499a.  Stridüra: A distance within the first nine nakñatras for the male horoscope from the nakñatra of the female is highly auspicious, the second nine is middling and the third nine is excellent.

499b-500a.  Agreement in Gaëa: The nakñatras in the human group (martya-gaëa) are: The three pürvas and uttaras viz. Pürvaphalguné, Pürväñäòha, Pürvabhädrapada, Uttaraphalguné, Uttarañäòha and Uttarabhädrapada, Rohiëé (Dhä), Bharaëé (Yämya), Ärdrä (Maheça).

500b.      Those of the divine group are: Çravaëa (Hari), Vasu (Äditya), Hasta (Arka), Svä (Väyu), Revaté (Antya), Anurädhä (Mitra), Açviné, Puñya (Ijya) and Mågaçérña (Indu).

501.                        Nakñatras of the Demonic gaëa (Rakño-gaëa) are: Maghä (Pitå), Citrä (Tväñöra), Viçäkhä (Dvidaivatya), Kåttikä (Agni), Jyeñöhä (Indra), Dhaniñöhä (Vasu), Satabhiñak (Väréça) Müla and Äçleñä (Ahi).

502.                        Compatibility of Temperaments: If the birth nakñatra of the couple is the same, it would be pleasing in many ways. It would be middling if one nakñatra is manushya (human) and the other Deva (Divine). Death will result if the manushya and the divine are united with the räkñasha (demonic).

503.                        Agreement between the Lords of the Räçi: If lords of the räçis of the couple are one in the 6th house and the other in the 8th, death will result. If it be fifth and ninth, there would be childishness. Second and twelfth house too, are not desirable. In the others, there will be excellent mutual attraction between the couple.

504.                        If the said lords are identical or friendly, the marriage will be happy. It might be so even in the case of two and twelve and the trines (trikoëā), but never in the case of six or eight.

505-506.           Agreement of Yoni20: The animals relating to the nakñatras Açviné etc., are in order:

                     (1) Açvéné: Horse; (2) Bharaëé: Elephant; (3) Kåttikä: Goat; (4) Rohiëé: Serpent; (5) Mågaçiras: Snake; (6) Ärdrä: Dog; (7) Punarvasu: Cat; (8) Puñya: Goat; (9) Äçleñä: Cat (10) Maghä: Rat; (11) Pürvaphalguné: Cow; (13) Hasta: Buffalo (14) Citrä: Tiger (15) Svä: Buffalo; (16) Visakha: Tiger; (17) Anudrädhä: Deer; (18) Jyeñöhä: Deer; (19) Müla: Dog; (20) Pürvabhädrapadä: Monkey; (21) Uttaräñäòha: Ox; (22) Çravaëa: Monkey; (23) Çraviñöhä: Lion (24) Çatabhiñak: Horse; (25) Pürvabhädrapadä: Lion (26) Uttarabhädrapada: Cow; (27) Revaté: Elephant.

507.                        The pair Dog and Deer; Mongoose and Serpent; Goat and Monkey; Lion and Elephant; Cow and Tiger; Rat and Cat; Buffalo and Horse are inimical.

508.                        Varëa (Caste)21 Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer are Brähmaëas. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are Kñatryas. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are Vaiçyas. If the male’s räçi is lower than that of the female in caste22, it is inauspicious.

509-510a.     Rajju or Näòé: The 27 nakñatras are in the form of a zig-zag rope. Each loop carrying 3 asterisms, thus forming three columns (näòés) of 9 naksätras each. If  the nakñatras of the male and female fall in the same column, it indicates death and not so in adjacent columns.23

510b-511a.  Different Types of Marriages: The three types of marriages that are approved by the Sage are: Präjäpatya, Brähma and Daiva. If performed at the said auspicious times, would be extremely beneficial.

511b.      The Äsura Marriage is achieved through the payment of money and Paiçäca is by kidnapping the bride. The Räkñasa marriage is done by winning over the bride in battle and Gändharva is made by mutual understanding.

512-513a.     Abhijit and Godhülikä24: The fourth lagna from the lagna at sunrise is called Abhijit and the 7th is called Godhülikä. Both are auspicious for marriage and will bless the couple with sons and grandsons. For the Easterners belonging to Bengal, Assam etc., and the people of Kaliìga (Orissa), Godhülikä is important.

513b-514.    Abhijit is considered as important in all regions as a destroyer of blemishes. The muhürta of two näòikäs when the Sun is at its zenith is called Abhijit. It wipes off all blemishes as the Pinäka-bowed (Çiva) wiped out the Tripuras.25

515                Prohibitions in Marriages: A daughter’s marriage should not be conducted for
three seasons after a son’s marriage. Neither should be performed, the sacrament
for the change to married life, vrata. When there has been an auspicious event,
                  th
ere should not be another auspicious event closely following.

516      the marriages of two sisters are conducted within six months of each other, one of

them will surely become a widow within three years.

517            Mutual marriages should not be performed nor should two daughters be
married to the same groom, nor two daughters born of the same parents to two
brothers born of the same parents.

518a.      Nor should two marriages be conducted at the same time, nor two tonsures.

518b-519a.  If a marriage is performed during Gaëda the child born during day time will kill his father. If born during the night, his mother, and if born during the (morning and evening) twilights, then death is upon himself. There is no exception to Gaëda.

519b.      A son and a daughter born in the nakñatra Müla will positively kill the father-in -law, but not one born in the ending quarter of that nakñatra.

520a-520b.  A boy, but not a girl, born in the first quarter of Äçleñä and the latter two quarters of Jyeñöhä will also kill the father-in-law.

521a.      A girl born in Müla or Pürväñòha will not harm the father or the mother, but the one born in Jyeñöhä will kill the elder brother of the husband, and one born in Viçäkhä (Dvidaiva), the younger brother.

521b-523.    Vadhüpraveça: For the auspicious entry of the bride into her husband’s household, the 6th, 8th 10th or 7th day counted from the day of marriage is recommended. If it is delayed, the marriage journey should be made leaving out the 2nd and other Even years eschewing the bride’s birth nakñatra, birth lagna, birth day and also avoiding the position of Venus.26

It may be noted that Venus rises in the West after its invisibility in its right motion (krama-mauòhya) and in the East after its invisibility in its retrograde motion ( vakra-mauòhya). It may be noted that since Jupiter moves outside the orbit of the Earth, it becomes invisible only in its right motion, and not in its retrograde motion.
The grouping of the Jyeñöha month, Jyeñöha daughter and Jyeñöha son in the Jyeñöha month (Jyeñöha-trayam), is not auspicious in marriage. To marry off a Jyeñöha daughter or a Jyeñöha son in the Jyeñöha month, in which case, a group of two Jyeñöhas is formed, is middling. What is auspicious is to have only one Jyeñöha at a time. In other words, it would be auspicious to marry off the eldest daughter and an eldest son separately and in months other than Jyeñöha.
3 Intercalary tithis etc. If three lunar days occur on a civil day, there will be tithikñaya (tithi expunged lunar day). On the other hand, if a tithi extends over three civil days, there will be an adhika (intercalary) tithi. Both are non auspicious. Civil days and lunar days are of variable lengths and do not coincide. Thus when a civil day is 24½ hours and the relevant lunar day is 24 hours and commences 15 minutes after the civil day, that civil day will contain in it, three lunar days. The first for the first 15 minutes, the second for the 24 hours and the third of the last 15 minutes. To correlate the lunar days and the civil days, one tithi will have to be expunged. The converse is the case when the lunar day happens to be longer than the civil day, which latter commences a little after the lunar day has commenced. On Vyatépäta and Vaidhåti, in their entirety, and half of Parigha being the 17th, 19th and 23rd of the 27 yogas.
Yoga at a given time
: The sum of the true longitudes of the Sun and the Moon at the required time, reduced to minutes, if divided by 800 minutes, will give the number of Yogas, which have elapsed. The portion gone (gata) and the balance (to go; gamya) in the current Yoga multiplied by 60 and divided by the sum of the daily motion of the Sun and Moon will give the corresponding nädikäs thereof.
4 Vedha: Literally piercing, viddhi; pierced, refers to the mutual affliction between the pairs of nakshatras that happen to be at the ends of the lines in the Païca-çaläkä-cakra (five spike diagram) and Sapta-çaläkä-cakra (seven spike-diagram) which might be represented as follows:

Païca-Çaläkä - Vedha-Cakra

Nakshatras such as Açwini, Pürväñäòhä, Bharaëé and Anurädhä are mutually afflicted. The ‘affliction’ is to be considered for the entrance of the bride into the groom’s house, offer an acceptance of the bride and marriage.

Sapta-Çaläkä - Vedha-Cakra

Nakshatras such as Bharaëé, Maghä, Kåttika and Çravaëa are mutually afflicted. Use of allied rituals.

Vedha on planets: Refer to The Crux of Vedic Astrology, the timing of Events by Sanjay Rath.

5 The planets on account of certain positions in the heavens, and the ‘houses’ (bhavas) on account of their being occupied or aspected by certain planets acquire certain sources of strength and weakness, called graha-bala; ‘planetary potency’ and bhava bala; ‘potency of the house’.

6 The Jämitra doña occurs when the 7th House from lagna or the Moon is occupied by any planet. For marriage, the house should be vacant.

7The Païcaka being the five sources of energy pertaining to a particular moment, known as    Agni, Roga, Cora, Måtyu and Räja. The numbers of the tithi, vära, nakñatra and lagna prevailing at the moment under consideration are added up and divided by 9. If the remainder is 1, it is Måtyu- Païcaka, indicative of danger; if the remainder is 2, it is Agni, indicative of risk of Fire; if 4, Räja, bad results; if 6, Cora – evil happenings; and if 8, Disease. Remainders 0, 3, 5, 7 are niñpaïcakas, free from the blemish of Païcaka and hence such moments are auspicious.

8 Pāpa-Ñaòvarga  is a group of six independent divisions of the zodiac and the day, each being used differently to read the future. The six vargas are: Räçi, Horä, Drekkäëa, Naväàça, Dvädaçäàça and Triàçäàça, the second being the division of the day and the others of the Zodiac, prognostications being made in a different way for each. Details from ‘Hindu Predictive Astrology’ by B.V. Raman pp. 92-97

9  The names of the fifteen lunar days are, Nandä, Bhadrä, Jayä, Riktä and Pürëa, these being repeated three    times. During the bright fortnight, their effect should be counted as non-beneficial, medium and beneficial. In the dark fortnight however, the reckoning should be beneficial, medium and non-beneficial, in order.
Thus the Nanda Days are: 1, 6, 11. Bhadr
ä: 2, 7, 12. Jayä: 3, 8, 13; Riktä: 4, 9, 14 and Pürëa: 5, 10, 15.

10 Upacaya is a term used for the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th signs from the Lagna.

11 The muhürta referred to here is the time measure of 2 näòikäs which is equivalent to 48 minutes. The muhürtas to be rejected in the seven week days are: Sunday the 14th, Monday the 8th and 12th; Tuesday on the 4th and 11th; Wednesday during the muhürta called Abhijit; Thursday on the 12th and 13th; Friday on the 4th and 8th and Saturday, on the 1st and 2nd as reckoned from Sunrise to sunrise on all days.

12 Tuesdays and Saturdays are to be invariably avoided for marriages.

13 Ekägala: The first half of Parigha is abhorred for all rites. In Viñkambha (# 1: Açvini-Yama) and Vajra (#15: Svati-Varuna), the first three näòikäs, in Gaëòa (#10: Magha-Agni) and Atigaëòa six, (#6 : Ardra-Moon); in Vyäghäta nine (#13: Hasta-Rudra/Maitreya); and in Çüla (#9 : Äçleñä-Ahi) are to be rejected. A Kharjürikä Diagram with the nakñatras Punarvasu (Aditi), Mågaçira (Indu), Maghä, Äçreñä (Ahi), Açviné, Müla, Hasta (Maitreya), Puñya (Ijya), with their diagrams have to be understood as the Head Nakñatras (mürdha-bhä), in order.

Draw a vertical line and 13 lines across it. In that diagram called Kharjürika-cakra, place the head nakñatra. Between the Sun and the Moon marked on the vertical line, mark the other 26 nakñatras, leaving out Abhijit (the 28th nakñatra). The pair of nakñatra on each “cross-line” called Ekärgala aspect each other.

14 Viddha means ‘afflicted’.

15 Païcagavya: The five products from the cow- milk, curds, ghee, urine and dung.

16 Vargottama-naväàçakas: Of the naväàçakas, the first naväàçakas in a sthira-räçi, the fifth in a cara- räçi and the ninth in a dvisabhäva-räçi, are especially benefic and are called vargottama-naväàçakas.

17 Kendra means a Quadrant. The Kendra Houses in a Zodiac are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th Houses.

18 Refer to the Païca-Çaläkä-Vedha-Cakra Diagram, Sloka 426.

20 Yoni-küöa indicates sexual compatibility.

21 Varna: This is indicative of the spiritual and egoistic development in a person.

22 Caste: Conversely, if the caste of the male räçi is the same or higher than that of the female’s räçi, it is auspicious.

23 Rajju or Näòé Küöa is extremely important in matching horoscopes, for it indicates the compatibility in physiological and hereditary temperaments. The three columns shown below represent the three humours (näòés), Väta, Pitta and  Kapha:

24 This muhürta is called Godhülikä because it occurs at dusk when the cows return home. Happy and expectant.

25  This reference is made to the complete uprooting of the three demoniacal cities called Tripura by Çiva with a single shot of his arrow. As a first step to the slaughter of the Tripuras, Ñiva sent Närada to Tripura. With Närada’s unusual spiritual powers, he made the asura women feel more attracted to the
