Emerald
Very fine Zambian-Awesome clarity and lustre

The rich grassy green colour of Emerald has been prized since antiquity. Treasured for thousands of years by different cultures all around the world, Emerald is said to hasten the intelligence, calms down nervous energy and soothes eye fatigue. Legend presents its owner the gift of eloquence, loyalty and faithfulness, psychic or intuitive abilities and communicative powers upon the beholder.

In Egyptian tombs, Emeralds were often buried with their mummies carved with a symbol denoting freshness and eternal youth.

In Vedic culture, recommendation of wearing an Emerald on the little finger of the right hand and against the skin to enhance the wearer with Mercury's benefic qualities.

An Emerald could almost be fingerprinted with its "cobweb" of inclusions, giving each gem a distinct identity. The extreme rarity of transparent /flawless emerald is why they can be more valuable.

Emerald comes from the beryl family. Normally colourless, it lends its rich green colour to minute traces of chromium and sometimes vanadium.

Emeralds grow in metaphoric rocks which restrict the size of emerald crystals, making them even rarer in large sizes.

How to choose an Emerald

Emerald, a relatively new find in Zambia has made emeralds readily available on the market today. Zambian emeralds have a rich deep colour and sometimes have very slight inclusions. Fine Zambian emeralds tend to be slightly darker green and some have a bluish overtone. Fine gems have a clear grassy green hue, which affords its place near the top range of quality in the world market. With unsurpassed quality, Zambian emeralds are not automatically treated at the mines like mines from Colombia. In order to enhance the quality, a Colombian Emerald maybe coated with a green coloured resin, commercially known as "Opticon", or it maybe oiled to fill the cracks/fissures making the gem lose it's lustre with constant use of detergents, cleaning with steam or ultrasonic machine. In its treated state, Emerald is less durable to sudden blows the very reason why a natural Zambian Emerald today is more prized than most producers in the world.

Demands for Natural Untreated Emeralds are used solely for astral remedies and similar purposes.

When choosing an emerald, the most important factors to consider are colour, cut, carat weight and clarity.

Because of the nature of it's hexagonal crystallisation, Emerald is most often cut in a rectangular step-cut, which is now popularly known as the Emerald Cut, has more value than Pear Shapes, Rounds, Ovals etc.
